"There is always a lot of focus on Christmas in our industry this time of year, as that is what the majority of the population celebrates. However, this month's blog hop is dedicated to those that celebrate winter holidays other than Christmas."
Hmm, a non-Christmas winter holiday. Well although I'm English, I live in Scotland. One of the main winter holidays in Scotland is Hogmanay. In Scotland we get an extra days holiday and the celebrations are steeped in history one of which is "first footing". I found some information here.
"First footing" (that is, the "first foot" in the house after midnight) is still common in Scotland. To ensure good luck for the house, the first foot should be male, dark (believed to be a throwback to the Viking days when blond strangers arriving on your doorstep meant trouble) and should bring symbolic coal, shortbread, salt, black bun and whisky. These days, however, whisky and perhaps shortbread are the only items still prevalent."
One of my neighbours met her husband when he first footed her! I thought it would be nice this coming Hogmanay to honour the tradition and give out some shortbread gifts. I used Everyday Treats to create a wrap for a glassine bag filled with shortbread fingers.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your day as you hop along to the next participant!

ReplyDeleteHey Debby - I too am a proud Scot living in England. I make a point of having a "First Foot" every year at Hogmanay and we always sit down at the bells to a home made staek pie, potatoes and soaked peas - it's one of the highlights of my year! Now if they brought back Fran and Anna (wait, how old are you??) then that would really be the icing on the cake, lol.
